St. John's ministry with younger children provides an opportunity to be in community learning the message of the Christian Gospel. Classes for K-5th grade are led my dedicated and faithful parents. The curriculum is provided by the Episcopal Church and follows the Scriptures and themes of the liturgical calendar. Classes begin at 9 am Sunday mornings. The first Sunday of the month the children worship with their families so that they may share in the full Eucharistic liturgy including ushering, reading the Scripture Prayers of the Peoples, or leading the Prayers of the People.
St. John's ministry with and to our teens is a wonderful cohort of middle and high school students that meet on the third Sunday of the month along with other Episcopal churches of the northern region in Montgomery County. These young adults from seven parishes explore ideas, have opportunities for ministry in area soup kitchens as well as mission trips.
Formation as a Christian is a life-long progress. Praying shapes believing as does the study of the Holy Scripture and other sound theological writing. St. John's offers a Sunday morning adult forum at 9 am where a variety of texts, topics, and significant issues of the day that shape our lives are discussed and explored. We have read the Bible in a year, cover to cover; generating wonderful discussions.
Holy Play is a worship-filled play date designed for babies, toddlers and
pre-schoolers and their care-giver. The program is meant to be relaxed and flexible, while exposing kids to pieces of our faith- prayer, sacraments, saints, and liturgical seasons. Interactive, sensory and engaging storytelling, exploration time and music to illuminate the mysteries of our faith are used. Drop in any week. Tuesday mornings at 9:30 during the school year.
Our Nursery program is a perfect, safe-space for children 5 and under to play and find a home in Christian community. Children are always invited into worship and never required to be in the nursery, but many parents find it easier to worship when their toddler has a safe space to play. The Nursery is open Sunday mornings from 9-11:30, with special hours for Holy Day services.
Our 8 am service is that of the Holy Eucharist. The service is quiet, with no music. By contrast, the 10 am service
is filled with classic and modern music, supported by choir, piano, organ,
and handbell ringers.
The preaching and teaching draw on Scripture as well as contemporary theological thought.
